Dune Part 2: A visual feast
As a book worm, I am ashamed to say that I have never finished reading this book, but have been quite intrigued by the good reviews to watch the movie.
When Dune Part 1 released 3 years back, I felt like I did not enjoy the film as much as I wanted to. The world building and the music was phenomenal, but I had this feeling that the movie ended without even starting. I understood that the point of the first part was to just serve as an introduction, but to any successful franchise's credit-in my opinion- there is an introduction, a climax and a possible conclusion that highlights the journey ahead for the characters, even if there is only a single portion of a book being adapted.
Also, what I am about to say is going to make the teenage version of myself cringe in disappointment- I am not as much of a reader as I was in my childhood. Big franchises with multiple characters make me chicken out of a book very early on these days. So it was my sole fault I didn't finish reading Dune.
However all the good reviews did encourage me to watch the second part of this movie in the theatres. I now understand that the first part of the movie was necessary to basically plunge the audience into the "action" in the second part.
Dune Part 2 doesn't disappoint at all. The amazing visuals, the stellar cast, Hans Zimmer, the hypnotising cinematography and an evolving director Denis Villeneuve all make this the first blockbuster of 2024.
Most action or sci-fi movies these days have plot lines that feel rushed, but Dune Part 2 allowed all the scenes to breathe and to build up an anticipation in the audience. The story was still a bit complicated for me or my naive ignorant mind, but for the first time in a while, I commend this film for making me curious enough to finish reading at least the first book so that I can understand the lore especially that of the Bene geserit.
